Can I Return Unused Underwear? (45 Biggest Brands Reviewed)

Returning an item is a simple thing for every one of us. Sellers these days are not asking customers what’s the reason for return and just refunding the money. When it comes to underwear is not a simple story like with other products. Buying underwear comes with a risk. What if undies don’t fit right? What if you change your mind? What you should do and what you should be aware of while returning briefs?

In this article, I’ll explain what to do in various situations and I’ll review the well-known underwear brand return policies to give you a full perspective on this matter. 

In the very beginning, you have to know that every customer is entitled to return a product by law. However, this law doesn’t apply to underwear that has been worn. The seller should accept a return if the item has still tags on and it hasn’t contact with the skin. To be precise, underwear can be returned if its condition is allowed to be resold.

The tricky thing for every seller is that they must determine if the briefs or boxers you’ve sent back have been worn or not. So, you might be in an unpleasant situation when you haven’t tried on the undies that you have returned, but the shop says that is not accepting a return. That’s why not always and not every brand or shop can accept your return. Most of the stores have their own return policy, especially for underwear.

I have prepared a quick list of 45 stores and brands that is selling men’s underwear and I have reviewed all returning policies for you. Have a look if you get a refund for the undies.

Here is a list of 45 shops that sell men’s underwear and a quick look at their returns policy. Worth mentioning that there are some shops and brands that are not accepting returns of underwear or are willing to accept them if they are returned in the specified condition.

Marks & Spencer

M&S in its own returns policy explained this matter quite simply. While returning underwear bought from Marks & Spencer you have to know that you are allowed to do so, but the packaging can’t be destroyed, and if applicable all tags and labels have to be attached, otherwise return will be refused. Have a look at a quote from M&S Return Policy:

You can return underwear and lingerie, so long as the product packaging hasn’t been damaged. If the item is not packaged, you can still return it, so long as the tags and hanger (if applicable) are still intact.

You can return swimwear, so long as any hygiene seals are still intact.

TK Maxx

TK Maxx doesn’t specify in their returns policy if they accept returns of underwear. What I understand from TK Maxx’s Return Policy. They are willing to accept the return of underwear if is unused and is in its original condition. Here is a quote from TK Maxx Policy:

Any item being returned must be unused, in its original condition (including packaging and labeling), and have all tags attached. If you use the item or remove/tamper with the tags, you will lose your right to return the goods under our returns policy.
Unless faulty, we are unable to offer an exchange or refund on:

– perishable items
– jewelry to be worn in a piercing
– items that are sealed for personal hygiene reasons where they have been unsealed
– customizable goods

TK Maxx Returns and Refunds

Primark

Primark is quite strict in returning underwear. On their site, I have found that they are not accepting returns of underwear unless is faulty due to hygiene reasons.

Due to hygiene reasons underwear cannot be returned. Of course, if there is a manufacturing fault with your garment you are welcome to return the items back to the store for a full refund.

Amazon

Returns on Amazon can be complicated. If you are buying directly from Amazon, you are entitled to return underwear if it is unused, and has all tags and labels attached. When it comes to third-party sellers, the return policy may vary.

Our advice for you is to check before you buy undies on Amazon. Just in case check if you are allowed to return it afterward. 

Amazon on their site is informing clearly what can’t be returned and doesn’t specify on the list of underwear. Have a look:

– Items classified as hazardous materials or that use flammable liquids or gases (contact the manufacturer directly for service, warranty, return, and refund information)

– Gift cards (except as required by law)
– Prepaid game cards (World of Warcraft, Xbox 360 Live, Wii Points, etc.)
– Some jewelry orders

Walmart

Walmart on their site doesn’t include any return policy regarding underwear. We are really surprised by that. On their site, you can find only information that every refund has to go through the verification process. My take is Walmart will decide individually if the return is accepted.

Costco

Costco doesn’t say anything about restrictions while returning underwear. In their returns policy, there is a note that they guarantee your satisfaction with any product, and they will refund you if you’re not satisfied with your purchase. Here is a quote from Costco Wholesale Return Policy:

We guarantee your satisfaction with every product we sell and will refund your purchase price, with the following exceptions:

– Electronics: Costco will accept returns within 90 days from the date of purchase for televisions, major appliances, projectors, computers, cameras, Aerial Cameras (drones), camcorders, digital music players, tablets, smartwatches, Cellular Phones (return details will vary by carrier service contract) and other electronic products identified by Costco from time to time.

– Diamonds: When returning items containing a 1.00 ct diamond or larger, Costco warehouses will require additional time to verify the diamond, in which case a refund will be approved upon positive verification. This process will require approximately 2 to 5 business days.

– Cigarettes and alcohol: Costco does not accept returns on cigarettes or alcohol where prohibited by law.

– Products with a limited useful life expectancy, such as tires and batteries, may be sold with a product-specific limited warranty.

– Custom Installation Services: Custom products ordered or installed according to our member’s personal and unique specifications cannot be returned or refunded, except for warranty repair/ replacement due to failure to meet specifications and otherwise to the extent required by law.

Costco may in the future restrict its return policy regarding these and other products. Restrictions will be shown at the point of purchase.

Because Costco doesn’t say clearly if they are accepting returns of underwear on their site. We have sent an email with a request for clarification. As soon as we receive a reply, we will update this section.

Target

Target is not informing clearly if they are accepting returns of underwear and what are the restrictions. In their Returns Policy, you can find general rules but there is nothing about underwear. In Target’s return exceptions underwear was not listed, but Target is saying that other restrictions may apply. Have a look:

Returns and exchanges without a receipt may be limited. Other restrictions may apply.
The following items cannot be returned:

– Open or defective collectibles (e.g., sports cards, special edition Barbie dolls, porcelain dolls, action figures, and die-cast cars)

– Personalized items and digital downloads

– Opened/unsealed breast pumps

– Specialty gift cards, pre-paid gift cards, and Target GiftCards cannot be returned or redeemed for cash or credit except where required by law. This includes Target GiftCards, Visa®, Mastercard®, or American Express® Gift Card, restaurant, entertainment, lottery cards.

Our take is that Target is accepting returns of underwear with some limitations. At least underwear has to be unopened and unused with all tags and labels on it. We have sent an email to Target with a request for clarification. As soon as we receive a reply, we will update this section.

GAP

GAP on their Return Policy site has included essential rules. While returning underwear or any other items bought from GAP, the customer has to return it in its original condition. The company has specified that boxer shorts and briefs have to be unworn and unwashed. Here is a quote from GAP’s Return Policy:

Items are in their original condition: unwashed and unworn. Items not in this condition will not be accepted. Final sale items cannot be returned or exchanged. Items which are damaged or defective may be returned or exchanged at any time.

Okay, Gap doesn’t distinguish between underwear and other clothes. However, this restriction could be interpreted as covering all products sold by GAP.

ASOS

ASOS on their Return Policy site mentioned that they are accepting returns as long as the returned item is in original condition. Here is a quote from ASOS’ Return Policy:

We get it, sometimes something just doesn’t work for you and you want your money back. As long as an item is still in its original condition, we accept returns for free, subject to the rules below, which include rules around fair use. None of these rules affect your statutory rights.

Okay, ASOS doesn’t say anything about underwear. However, this restriction could be interpreted as covering all products this e-commerce store sells.

Calvin Klein

Calvin Klein’s returns policy says that they are accepting returns of underwear in original, unused condition. All returned items must be unworn and all tags and labels must be attached. Here is a quote from CK’s returns policy:

Calvin Klein’s policy is to issue a refund for qualified merchandise returned in original, unused condition within 45 days of your shipment confirmation date for most items, exceptions stated below. Items must be unworn and tags must be attached. Final sale and custom items are not eligible for a return, refund, or credit.

American Eagle

Returns in American Eagle seem easy but quite confusing as well. On their site in the Return Policy section, there is information that everyone is entitled to make a return even if the item was washed or tags were taken off. On the other side in the same paragraph, AE is saying that they won’t accept returned swimsuits or bikini bottoms with removed hygienic liners. There is no word about underwear and especially briefs and boxers. Here is a quote from the returns policy:

If you’re not completely happy with a purchase, just return it for a full refund. Returns with proof of purchase (receipt, invoice, order confirmation page, order details page, order emails) will be refunded in the manner in which the original purchase was made. If you don’t have proof of purchase, we’ll let you exchange or give you store credit for the current price.

American Eagle Returns

Below that in the FAQ section there is an important note:

What happens if I take the tags off or wash the item? Can I still return/exchange?

Your return/exchange will still be processed if the original tag is missing.

If you buy a swimsuit or bikini bottom & remove the hygienic liner, we will no longer be able to accept the return.

Nike

Nike says that they are accepting returns of any item as long is unworn and unwashed. There is no word about special restrictions while returning underwear. Here is a quote from Nike’s Return Policy:

You can return items (some exceptions apply) for any reason within those 60 days. That includes custom Nike By You sneakers. Even after 60 days, you can still return items if they’re unworn and unwashed.

Adidas

Adidas in their Return Policy says in general that all their products have to be in their original state and have to have the original tags attached. There are no other restrictions which mean Adidas underwear can be returned if is unworn and unwashed. Here is a quote from the Adidas site:

– The package must be sent physically from within the United States 
– The product is in its original state and packaging

– Footwear is in the original shoe box

Puma says on their site that they are accepting returns of products in the original state, but with some exceptions. They have mentioned in Returns Policy that they are not accepting returns of bodywear products. Is Puma treating underwear as bodywear? I don’t think so, but it’s possible. Here is a quote:

We are happy to offer free online returns for orders placed on puma.com within 45 days of purchase. You may return your PUMA products* in their original, unused condition for a full refund.

Yes, Hugo Boss is accepting returns of underwear as long is unused, unwashed, and in original condition. Here is a quote from the Hugo Boss site:

Merchandise must be returned in its original, unused, unwashed condition within 30 days of the delivery date. For a full refund, bring your order receipt form and the original payment method to the HUGO BOSS store when you return the merchandise.

Under Armour is accepting returns of underwear as long is in original condition, is unwashed, and is unworn. Here is a quote from the UA site:

Items must be in their original condition and accompanied by the original Under Armour proof of purchase. For purchases outside of this timeframe, our standard 60 days for FREE returns and exchanges applies.

Ralph Lauren is saying in their Return Policy that they are willing to give a refund to the customer that is not entirely satisfied with their purchase. POLO Ralph Lauren Underwear can be returned if is unwashed, unworn, and has all original tags attached or is in the original package. Here is a quote from Ralph Lauren’s Return Policy:

We want you to be entirely satisfied with your RalphLauren.com purchase. If you are not, we will gladly accept the return of items that are unwashed, unworn, and unaltered with the original tags attached and accompanied by the original invoice for online orders, or purchase information from your printed store receipt, within 30 days of order shipment date (excluding watches and fine jewelry which must be returned within 10 days of the order shipment date).

Tommy Hilfiger is accepting returns of underwear as long is in original condition ie has all tags and labels attached, is unwashed, and is unworn. Here is a quote from the Tommy Hilfiger site:

Lacoste exactly specifies in the returns policy what kind of items they are accepting and when the refund will be processed. When it comes to Lacoste Briefs and Boxer shorts, the company is not accepting any returns. Unfortunately, Lacoste is not applying the same rules for returned underwear as the majority of other brands. Here is a quote from the Return Policy:

Diesel exactly specifies in the returns policy what kind of items they are accepting and when the refund will be processed. When it comes to Diesel Underwear situation with returns is different. Customers can return underwear if it’s in unaltered condition, unworn and unused. Here is a quote from Diesel’s Return Policy:

To return or exchange an item online, the Buyer must complete the steps listed in how to return. including filling out the Return Form. In addition,
a. the Products must not show signs of use, wear, wash, or damage in any way;

Ambercrombie & Fitch doesn’t specify if they are accepting returns of underwear. Their site policy says: 

To receive your refund to your original payment method, returns in resalable condition must be delivered to, and processed at, our Distribution Center within 30 days from the date of the last shipment. Please note that we cannot accept returns without your receipt, invoice, or order confirmation.

Ambercrombie & Fitch Return Policy

What I understand from Ambercrombie & Fitch’s Return Policy, they are accepting returns of items in resalable condition, which means returned underwear has to be unopened and unused with all tags and labels on it.

Tommy John

Tommy John has two return policies in place; Standard and Best Pair Guarantee. The first, Standard one is allowing to return of unworn underwear with all tags and labels attached. 

The second return/exchange policy is pretty unique.

If you’re not satisfied for any reason with your first purchase of Tommy John underwear, undershirt, tee shirt, bra, and socks (each an “Undergarment”), we’ll make it right by issuing a refund or allowing you to exchange the Undergarment.

Dolce & Gabbana is fully honored right to return every product. When it comes to men’s underwear, customers have to return unwanted briefs that are not damaged, washed, worn, or used. Here is a quote from Dolce & Gabbana’s Return policy:

Yes, Pump! Is accepting returns of underwear. Pump underwear to be returned has to meet the criteria to be accepted. Make sure that returned item has undamaged packaging, wasn’t worn, and contains all original tagging. Here is a quote from Pump! Site:

With Addicted Underwear return policy, may differ depending on where you buy. If you buy from a US store you cant return your unwanted underwear. The company is accepting returns of products that are damaged or defective. Here is a quote from the Addicted USA site:

REFUNDS will be issued ONLY when an item is damaged or defective and not replaceable.  Incorrectly shipped items will be reshipped at the expense of Addicted USA. 

On a CASE-BY-CASE basis and with prior approval REFUNDS to original form of payment will be authorized but WILL INCUR a 10% RESTOCKING FEE.

Off-White

Off-White underwear can be returned only if meet restrictions. Off-White Briefs and Boxer shorts can be returned only if they are in original condition, all tags are attached, and is unworn, and unused. Here is a quote from the Off-White site:

The returned items must be sent back in their original packaging together with all the materials received with the item/s (dust bags, covers etc.) and should have a copy of the invoice inside.

The item/s must be unharmed, unwashed, not worn or altered and must have all original security seals still attached. When trying on shoes, please be mindful not to scratch the soles or mark the shoe box. Yes, you can return unused underwear in 98% of situations. Because every single brand has similar return policies you can be confident enough to make a purchase of underwear online or in-store. However, some of the stores are not accepting returns of briefs and underwear for hygienic reasons. That’s why remember to check the return policy always before you buy. 

If you are sure that you are entitled to return undies just in case, make sure that you will not damage the package, wear underwear or cut the tags and labels off. That’s the most common reason why underwear is refused for return.
